Bad Credit, No Credit, ITIN, Past Repo? Here’s How a Fresh Start Works at DriveWise

By Ryan Green, Marketing Director — DriveWise (Greeley & Cheyenne) | Updated April 2026

DriveWise — buy here pay here dealership serving Greeley, CO and Cheyenne, WY since 2018

Life doesn’t always cooperate with a credit score. A medical bill nobody saw coming. A divorce that took half the income with it. A layoff in February. A car you had to give back because the payments stopped working. Or maybe you’ve never had a credit history at all — because you’re new to the country, just turned eighteen, or have always paid for things in cash.

However you got here, the first thing most dealers do when they see your file is say no. That’s the wall a lot of our customers hit before they hit ours. And it’s the wall DriveWise was built to tear down. Since 2018, with stores in Greeley, Colorado and Cheyenne, Wyoming, we’ve been the dealer that helps people who get told no everywhere else.

Direct Answer

DriveWise approves customers with bad credit, no credit, ITIN-only documentation, past repos, and recent bankruptcies — and most of our vehicles include an 18-month / 24,000-mile warranty.

The first step is a 60-second online pre-qualification at mydrivewise.com/fresh-start/. It’s a soft credit inquiry — it does not affect your credit score and is not a formal application.

A bilingual team member calls or texts you back within one business hour to walk you through what you qualify for and what to bring.

What “Fresh Start” Actually Means at DriveWise

A “fresh start” is easy to put on a billboard. Doing it well means three concrete things in practice:

1. We look at your whole situation, not a single number. We work with your job, your income, your housing, your references, and the realities of where you are right now. The number on a credit report is one input, not the answer. Customers in the 400s and 500s drive home from DriveWise every week.

2. The first step is free, fast, and doesn’t hurt your credit. Our pre-qualification form takes about 60 seconds and is a soft credit inquiry. It does not show up on your credit report and does not affect your score. There is no application fee and no obligation.

3. Most of our vehicles include an 18-month / 24,000-mile warranty. That’s coverage most buy-here-pay-here dealers don’t offer because they don’t have to. We offer it because we believe in what we sell, and because life happens after the keys are handed over too.

What “buy here, pay here” really means. A traditional dealer sells you a car, then sends your loan application to a third-party lender (a bank or credit union) for approval. If the lender says no, the deal dies. At a buy-here-pay-here dealer like DriveWise, the dealership is the lender. We approve the loan ourselves, in-house, based on what makes sense for our risk and your situation. That’s why we can say yes when banks say no.

Five Life Moments We Work With Every Day

Most of our customers come to us in one of these five situations. If you see yourself here, you’re in good company — and most of these scenarios end with a customer driving home the same day they walk in.

1. After a Repossession

A past repo on your credit report is not an automatic no at DriveWise. We see them all the time. We’ll look at why it happened, what has changed since, and whether your current income supports a payment that fits your monthly budget.

Most repossessed customers we work with end up driving home that same day. The reasons we hear most often: medical event, job loss, divorce, or a previous lender that didn’t communicate before repossessing. None of those make you a bad bet now.

2. After Bankruptcy or a Major Medical Event

If you’ve recently been discharged from a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13, or if a medical bill took your finances apart, we don’t hold that against you. Discharged debt is exactly that — discharged.

In some cases we can even approve customers who are still in an open Chapter 13 plan, depending on plan details and trustee permission. We’re looking at where you are now, not where you were the day you filed.

3. After a Divorce, Layoff, or Income Change

The credit hit from a divorce or job loss is rarely your fault, but it shows up on the report all the same. Joint accounts, missed payments while you were transitioning, the apartment move that threw your bills out of sync — we’ve seen all of it.

If you’re back on your feet with steady income, that’s the part of the story that matters most to us.

4. ITIN Buyers and Customers Without a Social Security Number

We work with customers using an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) every day at both stores. Bring your ITIN, a valid photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport, or matrícula consular), and proof of income. Our bilingual team will walk you through the rest.

Tenemos miembros del equipo que hablan español en ambas tiendas, todos los días. Visite mydrivewise.com/fresh-start/es/ para la versión en español.

5. First-Time Buyers With No Credit History

No credit isn’t the same as bad credit, but a lot of dealers treat it that way. Whether you’re buying your very first car at 19, finally moving from a cash-only life into building a credit history, or putting your name on a loan for the first time after years of riding on someone else’s, we can help.

Every on-time payment you make at DriveWise is reported to the credit bureaus, so you’re building real credit history alongside your reliable transportation.

Buy Here Pay Here vs. Traditional Auto Loans: What’s Different

A lot of customers come to us not entirely sure what “buy here, pay here” means or how DriveWise compares to other options they’ve been quoted. The shortest version: at a traditional dealer, your loan application gets sent out to a bank for approval — if the bank says no, you walk. At DriveWise, the dealership is the lender, so we approve the loan ourselves. Here’s how that plays out across the things that actually matter:

What Matters DriveWise (BHPH) Bank / Credit Union Loan
Approves bad credit? Yes — routinely Often denied below ~620
ITIN accepted? Yes Rarely
Down payment Typically low; some under $1,000 10–20% common
Decision speed Same day, usually within 1–2 hours 1–3 business days
Interest rate Higher; refinanceable after 12 months on-time Lower if approved
Builds credit? Yes — payments reported to bureaus Yes
Warranty included? Most vehicles — 18 mo / 24,000 mi Depends on dealer; not the lender’s call
Bilingual support Yes, every day, both stores Varies by branch

Worth being honest: BHPH interest rates are higher than what a customer with a 720 credit score would get from their credit union. That’s the trade-off for being approved when the credit union said no. The play most of our customers run is to use the DriveWise loan to drive a reliable car, build (or rebuild) credit through 12 months of on-time payments, and then refinance the loan at a lower rate. That path is real — we’ve walked it with hundreds of customers.

The 18-Month, 24,000-Mile Warranty — What It Covers and Why It Matters

This is the part most people don’t expect from a buy-here-pay-here dealer.

Most BHPH dealers sell a car, hand over the keys, and stop returning calls when something breaks. That’s the stereotype, and it’s earned. We won’t pretend the entire industry is great — we’ll just tell you what we do.

The majority of vehicles on our lot include a limited warranty covering major mechanical components for 18 months or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. Coverage details vary by vehicle, but the warranty exists for one reason: a customer who’s rebuilding their finances cannot afford to be stranded on the side of I-25 with a transmission that died at 43,000 miles. So we cover the parts of the car that, if they fail, would actually wreck someone’s month.

What to ask your DriveWise team member

Coverage varies by vehicle, so before you sign, ask three specific questions:

• “Does this specific vehicle qualify for the 18-month / 24,000-mile warranty?”

• “What components are covered, and what are the exclusions?”

• “If something covered fails, where do I take it for repair?”

How to Apply: Three Simple Steps

There are three ways to start with DriveWise, and you can pick whichever feels easiest. Most customers do step one online, then come in to finish steps two and three the same day.

  1. Pre-qualify online (60 seconds, no credit hit). Visit mydrivewise.com/fresh-start/ and complete the short form. We need basics like name, ZIP, monthly income range, and down payment range. A bilingual team member calls or texts you back within one business hour.
  2. Pick a vehicle that fits your approval and your life. Once you’re pre-approved, we walk the lot together at the store closest to you and find a vehicle that fits your budget — not one that pushes you out of it. We’re honest about which vehicles will and won’t fit your monthly payment goal.
  3. Drive home with a real warranty in writing. Sign your paperwork, get the keys, and start (or restart) your credit history with every on-time payment. Most customers complete the entire process — pre-qual through driving away — in a single visit.

What to Bring When You Come In

You don’t need every item on this list to start the conversation. Bringing as much as you can speeds the process up. If you’re missing something, call ahead — we can usually work with what you have.

The DriveWise Documents Checklist

Valid photo ID — driver’s license, state ID, passport, or matrícula consular. ITIN works in combination with a valid photo ID.

Proof of income — two recent paystubs, or a recent bank statement, or (for self-employed customers) a recent tax return. Cash-paid? Bring two months of bank statements showing deposits.

Proof of residence — a recent utility bill, lease agreement, or any official mail showing your name and current address.

References — three to five names with phone numbers. Family members count.

Down payment — cash, debit card, or cashier’s check. We’ll tell you the exact number after pre-qualification, so there are no surprises at the desk.

Built for Northern Colorado & Southeast Wyoming

DriveWise was built for the people who actually live and work here. That’s not marketing language — it’s what shapes how we underwrite, what kinds of vehicles we stock, and how we communicate.

In Greeley and the surrounding Weld County communities — Evans, Garden City, LaSalle, Eaton, Ault, Windsor, Milliken — a meaningful share of working families speak Spanish at home. Many work in the meat-packing, agricultural, oil & gas, and construction industries that keep the High Plains running. Wage statements look different. Hours fluctuate. Cash gets used. The conventional auto-finance model doesn’t fit cleanly. We adapted DriveWise to that reality from day one, including hiring bilingual team members at both stores so that no customer has to feel guesswork in their second language while making a major financial decision.

In Cheyenne and Laramie County, Wyoming, the picture is similar with its own twist — a service-and-rail economy with growing Hispanic and immigrant communities, plus a wide rural draw from Burns, Pine Bluffs, Carpenter, and northern Colorado border towns. We pull customers from a 35-mile radius around the Logan Avenue store every week. Reliable transportation isn’t a luxury here; it’s how you keep a job that’s 22 miles down the highway.

A vehicle from DriveWise has to do real work in real winters: get to the 6 a.m. shift in February, haul groceries through Pine Bluffs wind, and not strand you on the way back from a doctor’s appointment in Loveland. That’s why we include the warranty. That’s why we underwrite based on income and stability, not just a credit number. That’s why we say yes.

Two Stores. Same Answer.

Whether you’re in Northern Colorado or Southeast Wyoming, the answer at DriveWise is the same. Both stores share inventory, share the approval team, and share the bilingual support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will applying online affect my credit score?
No. The pre-qualification form on the DriveWise Fresh Start page is a soft credit inquiry. It does not appear on your credit report and does not affect your credit score. A formal credit application happens later and only with your written authorization.
What credit score do I need to be approved at DriveWise?
There is no single minimum credit score required. We look at your full situation — income, employment, housing, and references — not just a credit number. Customers in the 400s and 500s drive home from DriveWise every week. Apply online to see what you qualify for.
Can I buy a car at DriveWise with an ITIN instead of a Social Security Number?
Yes. We work with ITIN customers every day at both stores. Bring your ITIN, a valid photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport, or matrícula consular), and proof of income. Our bilingual team can walk you through the process in English or Spanish.
How much down payment do I need at DriveWise?
Down payments at DriveWise vary based on the vehicle and the approval. Many customers drive home with under $1,000 down. Apply online to get a specific quote on what your down payment options would look like — there is no obligation.
Does DriveWise offer a warranty on used vehicles?
Yes. The majority of our vehicles include a limited 18-month or 24,000-mile warranty (whichever comes first) covering major mechanical components. Coverage details vary by vehicle. Ask your DriveWise team member for the specific terms on the vehicle you are considering.
What documents do I need to bring to DriveWise?
A valid photo ID, recent proof of income (typically two pay stubs or a recent bank statement), proof of residence (utility bill or lease), and a list of three to five references with phone numbers. If you are missing one of these, call us at (970) 353-9815 in Greeley or (307) 487-7778 in Cheyenne and we can usually work with what you have.
I had a car repossessed. Can I still buy from DriveWise?
Yes. A past repossession is not an automatic no at DriveWise. We see them often. We will look at why it happened, what has changed since, and whether your current income supports a reasonable payment. Many of our customers have a repo on their credit report.
Can I buy a car at DriveWise after a bankruptcy?
Yes. We approve customers after Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcies, including customers who are still in an open Chapter 13 plan in some cases. Discharged debt is treated as exactly that — discharged. We focus on where your finances are now, not where they were when you filed.
How fast does the DriveWise approval process work?
The online pre-qualification form takes about 60 seconds and a bilingual team member will reach out within one business hour during open hours. If you walk in with your documents, most approvals are completed the same day, often within an hour or two.
Can I refinance my DriveWise loan after I rebuild my credit?
Yes. After 12 months of consistent on-time payments, many DriveWise customers qualify to refinance their loan at a lower rate through a bank or credit union. We will help you understand the path. The goal is to get you the car today and a better rate when your credit catches up.
Do you have Spanish-speaking salespeople at DriveWise?
Yes — every day, at both stores. Walk in or call and ask for a member of our bilingual team. Or visit mydrivewise.com/fresh-start/es/ for the Spanish version of our Fresh Start page.
Where can I see DriveWise in person?
DriveWise has two locations: 2805 8th Ave, Greeley, CO 80631, phone (970) 353-9815; and 1701 Logan Ave, Cheyenne, WY 82001, phone (307) 487-7778. Walk in any time during open hours, no appointment needed. If you’d like, pre-qualify online first at mydrivewise.com/fresh-start/ so we can have your file ready when you arrive.
